Level III Re-Certification

Complete your re-certification as quickly and as easily as possible. Just complete the short online classroom portion from the comfort of your home and then arrive in-person to complete a quick refresher on defensive tactics and shoot your qualification course.

Commissioned security officers and personal protection officers shall complete six (6) hours of continuing education. This training course must be administered by a licensed Level III Training School and taught by a licensed Level III Instructor. The demonstration of firearm proficiency must be completed within 90 days of the renewal application date.

Hours Required:  6 hours.  Students may work at their own pace but must complete the online classroom training within 14 days of beginning the course. Students will need to attend a firearm qualification in order to receive their certificate of completion. The firearm proficiency must be completed no longer than 90 days before applying for renewal.

Expiring Level III License  

Grade Requirements

The passing grade of all written examinations shall be a minimum of 75% correct answers. The passing grade for firearms qualification shall be a minimum of 70%.

Learning Objectives

The student will refresh their knowledge of the legal authorities pertaining to the role and responsibilities of a Commissioned Security Officer and will be able to demonstrate proficiency in techniques and tactics necessary to carry out the duties of a Commissioned Security Officer.

Upon successful completion of the course and obtaining a passing grade on both the final exam and firearm qualification, the student will be issued a certificate of completion. The certificate of completion DOES NOT allow a student to begin or continue working as a Commissioned Security Officer, it only provides the documentation that the required training has been successfully completed.

In order to begin or continue working as a Commissioned Security Officer, the student must be employed with a licensed security guard company. The student will then register for their security license through the Texas Department of Public Safety – Private Security Bureau using their online TOPS website:

Once the student has created their TOPS account and registered for their license, the student will upload their training certificate through the TOPS online portal. The requirements related to license renewal as a Commissioned Security Officer are listed below:

 

Texas Administrative Code 35.161

 

(a) An application to renew an individual license may not be submitted until the required minimum hours of department approved continuing education credits have been earned in accordance with the Act and this chapter. Proof of the required continuing education must be maintained by the employer and contained in the employee's personnel file. All individual licensees shall indicate they have completed the required minimum hours of department approved continuing education credits on their application for renewal.

 

(g) Commissioned security officers and personal protection officers shall complete six (6) hours of continuing education by completing the renewal portions of the Level III or IV training course, as applicable. All continuing education for commissioned security officers and personal protection officers must be taught by department approved training schools and instructors. Commissioned security officers shall submit a firearms proficiency certificate along with the renewal application.

 

(m) Attendees of continuing education courses shall maintain certificates of completion furnished by the school director in their files for a period of two (2) years. Attendees shall furnish the department with copies of all certificates of completion upon request.

 

(n) Continuing education courses are only valid if completed within the two-year period preceding the license's current expiration date.
